Secrets Revealed: Rodney James talks about the Benalla Art Gallery Collection

Join art historian Rodney James for an illustrated talk based on his time as Benalla Art Gallery’s inaugural Researcher in Residence.
Rodney will discuss selected paintings in the Ledger Collection including favourites by John Russell, Clara Southern, Roy de Maistre and Grace Cossington Smith.

What did each of these artworks reveal and how has Rodney’s research led to a better understanding of their context and significance? 
Rodney James is an independent curator and writer with 30 years-experience in the visual arts sector. His most recent books include a monograph on Melbourne printmaker Ian Gardiner, a forthcoming study on the life and pottery of Una Deerbon, and work in progress on the Herald art critic Alan McCulloch. Rodney is a researcher/writer with Menzies Fine Art and an art valuer specialising in Australian paintings, watercolours, prints, drawings, photographs and sculpture from 1850.

Secrets of the Studio: Ivan Durrant in Conversation

Join Benalla Art Gallery Director Bryony Nainby in conversation with artist Ivan Durrant to discuss his approach to painting, highlights from his career and his current exhibition, Colouring Lake Mokoan.

Ivan’s paintings of Lake Mokoan’s shimmering water and drowned stag trees are presented alongside studies of the paint palettes he used to create them. In this conversation Ivan will share his way of seeing the world as patterns of light and form, and the creative processes through which he materialises this vision through paint.
Ivan Durrant is an Australian painter and performance artist whose work is held in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia, many Australian state and regional galleries, private collections and the British Museum.  The National Gallery of Victoria will present a major career survey exhibition of his work in 2021.

ART ON SATURDAYS: Resin Jewellery Workshop with Kate Rohde

Join sculptor Kate Rohde for an introduction to the materials and techniques required to make simple silicone moulds and resin casts. 

Participants will produce an item of colourful jewellery such as a bangle or pendant. Each stage of production will be covered, from creating an original design, setting up the mould, casting and finishing.

ART ON SATURDAYS: Finding Form & Tone: Animal Portraits with Kate Jenvey

Explore the effect of light on animals and how it defines form. Kate will also discuss the importance of edges in rendering drawings to look realistic, along with value and tone, while building knowledge of pencil application and techniques.

These elements are the foundation of drawing any subject matter whether it be animals, portraits, still life or landscapes. Participants will then use these new skills to draw animal portraits.

ART ON SATURDAYS: Portraiture with Janet Leith

Janet Leith will guide students through the art of drawing and painting portraits. She uses a variety of media to produce dynamic artworks with a focus on oil painting methods. Janet is passionate about sharing different techniques and mediums, and supporting students in their development of individual styles and ideas. (Participants are asked to bring along a photographic portrait of their intended subject.)
