Benalla Art Gallery presents Echoes of Nature and Home in the Gallery Shop throughout November. The exhibition showcases a range of original paintings by two of the Benalla Broken River Painters, Narelle Leaf and Marion Wroe.
Narelle Leaf came from Melbourne to live and work in Benalla in 1997. Her passion for painting developed after she began learning Folk Art with her sister Coral while her love of botanical art was inspired by meeting local expert Margaret Zaal. Recently, she has also taken lessons with local artist Louise Carlisle, further honing her skill in watercolour. For this exhibition Narelle is presenting a collection of watercolour washes and nature studies.
Marion Wroe’s acrylic paintings featuring charming cottages and vibrant flowers are complimented with brooches she crafts from FIMO polymer clay. Marion has always painted and joined the Broken River Painters after the death of her husband finding solace and joy in her painting journey. She is inspired by different influences including Art Deco, North Queensland housing styles, Vogue magazine, and Clarice Cliff pottery,
Both artists have successfully sold their works and received awards at local art shows.
The Broken River Painters is a long-established art group in Benalla who meet on every Wednesday, except between Christmas and New Year. Members use a wide variety of media including graphite, charcoal, watercolour, acrylics, oils, coloured pencils and pastels. Their studio is in BARC hut 11 at the Benalla Airport and there are members in attendance on most weekdays. Usually they open the studio no later than 10AM and work (and chat) until around 1.30PM, having brought their equipment and lunch with them.
