Image: Portrait of Kate Gorman, LEITH Janet, biro on paper

Saturday 22 and 29 August, 10AM–2PM

Get inspired by portraiture and learn how artists of the Archibald Prize and ABC TV’s Portrait Artist of the Year create their realistic images. During these two workshops you will be guided through techniques and skills to create an accurate self-portrait or a portrait of a family member or friend.

In the first workshop you will be introduced to the grid technique of drawing and shown step-by-step how this enables you to accurately copy and enlarge an image for your drawing onto heavy paper. You will be using a printed coloured A4 photo of a face (that you will need to bring) and a copy of the digital image on your phone or tablet.

During the second workshop you will delve into the detail of the portrait as you explore drawing techniques using pencils & pastels. This will give you the ability to create various skin tones that will bring the face to life.

Whether a beginner or experienced artist, these workshops will develop insights and understanding of portraiture and enrich your confidence in developing portraits of your own.
