Growing Up With You [detail]
An in-conversation exploring artistic practice through the lens and experience of motherhood
Join artists Mimi Leung, Meg Doller, and Matrescence Coach and Midwife, Louise Thornton to discuss how artistic identity and practice can shift through experiences of Matrescence.
Matrescence is the process of becoming a mother, including the physical, psychological and emotional changes experienced by women after the birth of their child. This conversation will explore how each artist’s practice has evolved through this process, including adaptations to their practical approaches, concepts, and ideas. This talk will provide insight from an experienced midwife into the physiological and psychological changes experienced by women throughout the Matrescence period, aligning this with the evolution of creativity and artistic practice.
This discussion is presented as part of the public program of events in celebration of Mimi Leung’s exhibition Growing Up With You which refers to both Leung’s relationship with her art practice, and with her children – reflecting on how her attitudes to art and her own practice have changed as she has grown up and had kids.
About the Speakers:
Mimi Leung
Born in Hong Kong and growing up in England, Mimi studied graphic design at Central St. Martins and later completed an MA in Communication Art and Design at the Royal College of Art in 2007. Now based in Shepparton, north east Victoria, she maintains a prolific practice as a multidisciplinary artist working across drawing, animation and illustration. Her work “explores identity, belonging and using art to understand and transcend the mundanity of daily life.” Mimi’s commercial clients have included Transport For London, Disney Australia, Samsung, Slurpee, and The New York Times.
Meg Doller
Meg Doller is a contemporary mixed-media artist and writer who has been creating and exhibiting for more than 20 years. Meg describes art and words as ‘persistent’ elements of her thoughts and life. She creates works across disparate themes, methods and subject matter, taking inspiration for her mixed media, photographic, print, textile and word-based works from personal experiences and her immediate environment. In recent years, Meg has explored waste as theme and material in her visual arts practice, and combined her photography with new writing. She strives to interpret her geographic and individual place in the world through conceptually layered works.
Louise Thornton
Founder of Shine Birth, Louise has worked as a Registered Midwife for over 18 years, working with women who birth in hospitals and at home. As a Matrescence Coach, Louise assists mothers to reflect, resolve and move into motherhood feeling fully consolidated, positive and uninhibited – and therefore able to engage fully with the experience.
