JANE & NORTON GRIMWADE FAMILY FUND
The Jane and Norton Grimwade Family, along with their two daughters, Amanda and Melissa, share a lifelong commitment to art and community.
Jane’s deep involvement in the theatrical and visual arts began with a Diploma in Dress Design from RMIT. After arriving in Benalla in 1966, she became one of the six founders of the Benalla Art Gallery the following year, established under the inspiring vision of Pat Gardner (née Carnegie). Together, they formed a committee to lobby the Council, the National Gallery of Victoria, and the State Government for support.
Jane was later appointed to the Regional Galleries Association, alongside Freddie Kirkwood, to learn how other regional galleries operated. She continued to support Pat Gardner’s passionate and tireless formation of the activity’s groups, ceramics, painting, weaving and more. Jane recalls that Audrey Banfield, after completing her arts degree at the University of Melbourne, guided the Gallery through its formative period as curator with her wisdom and knowledge that set a benchmark for the Gallery’s future.
The founders sought guidance from Eric Westbrook and Patrick McCaughey on how the Benalla Art Gallery could distinguish itself, and together they developed a focus on collecting post-1967 contemporary art—works that would challenge artistic boundaries and reflect the spirit of their time.
With modest funds, the fledgling committee began purchasing and exhibiting works in the front section of the Soldiers Memorial Hall. Eventually, with support from the State Government, local council, and generous benefactors, architects were appointed, builders tendered, and in 1975 the doors of the Benalla Art Gallery officially opened.
The Benalla Art Gallery Foundation remains a vital part of Jane’s life’s work and love. She feels privileged to have been a founder of a place that has enriched the Benalla community, fostered tourism, and celebrated creativity. Through perseverance, collaboration, and a shared belief in the arts, the Grimwade Family contributed to building the Gallery and shape the beautiful lake and gardens that now surround it.
