Benalla Art Gallery presents Unfolding Landscapes, a selection of Joan Mullarvey’s collagraphs, lino and mono prints inspired by the patterns and rhythms of the north east Victorian landscape. The textural works are imbued with a distinctive golden glow. Light streaming across crops highlight the folding and unfolding of the cultivated landscape, in contrast to the lyrical nature of Mullarvey’s works depicting other untouched parts of the region.

The artist explains, “the methods I use allow me to capture the beauty, harshness and fragility of our country. I often collect foliage from the roadside which  ink and transfer the image to paper; this process allows me to play with themes of transience and impermanence, capturing a moment in time before the beauty fades and disappears into the undergrowth.”

Joan Mullarvey is an accomplished artist living in north east Victoria and has been the recipient of many awards and commendations, most recently selected as a finalist in the biennial Inkmasters Print Exhibition 2021, Tanks Art Centre, Cairns. Describing herself as an experimental printmaker, her work at times crosses the border between painting and printmaking, creating bold and distinctive images.
