Let’s play and explore the Gallery collection, and of course make some ART!

The Bennett Bequest currently on display in the Ledger Gallery, features some exciting works from the collection of both contemporary and historic significance. For our little ones, there are some playful and imaginative artworks that allow us to explore our creativity using both places we know and imagine, as well as making pictures with our bodies.

In this session of Little Artists, we will draw our attention to artworks by Sally Smart to make shadow sketches and play with real lights and props to create shadow scenes using our body.

In response to Polixeni Papapetrou’s playful portraits, we will have fun dressing up as different ‘subjects’ so our adults can take pictures of us – creating our very own portraits!

Materials: Paper, pencils, glue, scissors, props, objects, dress ups, torch, BYO Smart Phone or camera.

Definitions and Learnings: The term subject in art refers to the “what” in a piece of art: the topic, focus, or image (person, object, place).

This activity encourages playfulness and is an opportunity to safely use materials such as scissors and glue and introduce the idea of a shadow drawing of an object in one solid colour, usually black on a white background.

Benalla Art Gallery’s Little Artists program is developed specifically for pre-school children. We use games, story-telling and creative activities to encourage young children, and their parents and carers, to have fun while learning about art.
