Walk amongst delicately woven fish and sea creatures, and wonder at some traditional Indigenous weaving. This month we take a look at the immersive exhibition, Interwoven: Stories of Country from North and South, and learn about the practice of weaving and its many forms. Children will use their keen eye (and number skills) to count fish, rays, coral and other animals and objects created by the artists; all hand crafted from old nets and natural or found materials.

We will then learn some basic weaving skills to create a baby sea turtle.

Materials: Cardboard, wool, thread, ribbon, beads, leaves.

Definitions and Learnings: This activity encourages the development of  fine motor skills through weaving and allows the children to discover texture, through the feel of different weaving materials (wool, ribbon, thread, paper).

The exhibition explores cultural practices of weaving and connection to country, as well as the concept of environment and the threat to our ocean’s. This session invites carers and children to discuss these concepts and explore our impact on and place in the world.

Benalla Art Gallery’s Little Artists program is developed specifically for pre-school children. We use games, story-telling and creative activities to encourage young children, and their parents and carers, to have fun while learning about art.
