Benalla artist Sandy Wingate presents a collection of vibrant watercolour works on paper and acrylic paintings on canvas. Her floral themed artworks draw inspiration from her immediate surroundings and the Australian landscape. These artworks present bold and dynamic interpretations of her own garden and the native flowers that inhabit the region.
The Night Garden theme draws on the magical and abstract qualities of Sandy’s own garden at night. Sandy explains, “It gives me an opportunity to create exotic and colourful images in a style that encompasses my love of folk art and botanical painting.”
Sandy started her painting journey during the Covid lockdowns, and her artistic style has evolved over time. She transitioned from traditional botanical art to producing vibrant abstract representations of flowers and plants. Her work now features bold, flat planes of colour and shape, employing cropping and exaggeration of proportions in her art.
Sandy is currently President of Bridge Street Studios, Benalla; is a long-time member of Friends of the Gallery Wangaratta; and a resident artist at Art Gallery on Ovens, Wangaratta. She has exhibited her work at Gallery 294, Corowa; Bush Gatherings Studio, Violet Town; Art Gallery on Ovens, Wangaratta; the King Valley Art Show; and the Rutherglen Art Show.
