Teepee fired pots   2022

2nd May – 31st May 2022
Gallery Shop

Benalla Art Gallery presents a stunning series of Teepee Fired Pots by Susie Buykx in the Gallery Shop throughout May. The artist has embraced experimentation and observation, chance and technical prowess in equal measure. The result is an elegant body of lightweight pots which strongly reflect the atmospheric qualities of a north east Victorian sunset as the seasons change.

The artist explains, “Whilst bushwalking the natural colours and lines of the country of north east Victoria, together with the changing hues of the grazing country and bush land are a constant source of inspiration. Whilst travelling overseas in later years I visited many potters in France and Spain and was inspired by the natural affinity they had for their local heritage and landscape. One of my favourite styles is teepee firing (fire restrictions permitting). These pots were fired at my son’s property in the Warrenbayne hills. The use and love of clay, put simply, is a passion.”

Susie Buykx has lived in north east Victoria for many years. She was introduced to pottery many years ago and has undertaken short courses as the dictates of her life have permitted, but she is largely self taught. She has attended workshops and day classes and has shown her pots at the Victorian Craft Centre.
