Featuring the work of five female artists who are pushing the field of craft forward in dynamic ways, Temporal Artefacts explores processes of time and the transformation of materials by hand. The reinterpretation of ancient traditions, the learning of skills passed down through generations and the enduring impacts of human actions are central themes within the exhibition.

Working in disciplines collectively described as craft, each artist utilises her skills to transform materials into artworks which engage with contemporary concerns regarding the environment, consumerism and traditional practices. Highly accomplished in centuries old practices, each approaches her work in new and unexpected ways, demonstrating strong use of materials, innovative processes, and conceptual and physical rigour.

Each artist’s practice is grounded in one core material – fibre, clay, metal, wood and plastic. Each artwork has been created by intensely physical processes, extraordinary skill and the embodied knowledge that comes from years of work and experimentation.

Temporal Artefacts will include objects and installations which raise questions about environmental care, mass production and the meaning of objects in our daily lives, and highlight new ways in which craft is being incorporated and pursued within contemporary art practice.
