Local elder and artist, Aunty Desiree Walker will show participants the Victorian method of Indigenous weaving techniques to create a small woven artwork. Participants can make a small bowl or a pair of earrings while learning this meditative technique. The workshop coincides with the display of Aunty Desiree’s work within the exhibition Interwoven: Stories of Country from North and South on display at Benalla Art Gallery until early September. The Indigenous weaving that Aunty Desiree will teach participants is Women’s Business so this workshop is only for females and those identifying as female.

Please note: This workshop will include a half hour lunch break. BYO lunch or purchase from Munro+Sargeant Café at the Gallery.

About the artist:
Aunty Desiree Walker’s passion for weaving was fostered nearly 20 years ago through a series of workshops presented by Palawa Elders in Shepparton. She continued to practice weaving before dedicating herself to it in the last four years. She has exhibited and delivered workshops at North East Artisans, Benalla Art Gallery, GANEAA, and local schools, and also featured in Women of Our Land, an exhibition by North East Victorian artists at the Wangaratta Visitor Information Centre in 2020.
