Name/TitleBenalla Ceramic Mural
About this objectNumerous artists and contributors worked on the Ceramic Mural from its inception in 1983 until completion in 2010.
The large, three-dimensional Ceramic Mural was designed and constructed in situ beside the Broken River in Mair Street, Benalla, at the site of an historic blacksmith's forge. The cladding tile work for the structure is handmade, being 'slabbed' and formed onsite, marked into tile shapes, and the resulting terracotta tiles being worked on offsite at the Workshop out at one of the BARC huts at the Benalla aerodrome. Many tiles were burnished before firing in the large kiln, while other tiles were fired and then glazed before undergoing a second firing. The finished tiles were then transported back to the construction site to be laboriously applied to the Mural in stages. Each of these processes took several days to complete for each small section being worked on.
The whole project took decades, and involved many people, including architects, designers, artists and artisans, tradespeople, community organisations, volunteers, and a wide range of funding and support from Government and non-government sources.
Ongoing research is being undertaken to update the Benalla Art Gallery records for this large scale community artwork.
