Friday 2 May, 10—10.45AM

In this Little Artists session, participants will learn the basics of leaf dyeing or ‘Hapa–Zome’ style dyeing and printing.

Inspired by the beautiful flower designs and imagery in Jason Parker’s exhibition RISE, RUIN, RENEW REPEAT, using flowers and leaves we will make markings on paper and cloth to later create a hanging artwork.

This method involves pounding flowers and leaves onto fabric or paper. This is the simplest method of transferring colour onto cloth. Unlike the other natural dyeing methods, ‘Hapa – Zome’ doesn’t require the fabric to be prepared in anyway which makes it a great safe activity to do with kids.

Materials: Fabric, paper, leaves, flowers, mallet

Definitions and Learnings: This activity encourages the development of fine motor skills, colour recognition as well as children’s ability to identify and make shapes and patterns.

Ages: For pre-school aged children and their parents/carers

Cost: FREE

Registration essential: Please call 03 5760 2619 or email gallery@benalla.vic.gov.au

Where: Benalla Art Gallery, Patricia [Pat] Gardner Studio

Benalla Art Gallery’s Little Artists program is developed specifically for pre-school children. We use games, story-telling and creative activities to encourage young children, and their parents and carers, to have fun while learning about art.

Sessions are free and are scheduled for the first week of each month from February to December.
