Benalla Art Gallery is fortunate to have an impressive Permanent Collection thanks to the generosity of benefactors and wise selection by our Directors. In our 50 years in this building, many have become favourites with locals and visitors. We are often asked where our Australian Impressionists or Heidelburg School paintings and other popular works are when they are not on display.
The Arthur Streeton painting, Impression for Golden summer, has been a favourite for many over the years as has Ethel Carrick’s In the Botanic Gardens, Penleigh Boyd’s Edge of the forest, our Clarice Beckett works and Ethel Spowers’ Swings.
Is it childhood memories or fond reminisces of past happiness that make a work a favourite for someone? Are they responding to the emotion or mood that the painting provokes? The reasons are many and varied, and unique to the person. We hold these artworks close to our hearts as they are some of our favourites. We hope they are some of yours as well.
