Janet LEITH, Self-portrait 2020
Monday 6 May, 10-11AM
Join us, in conversation with Janet Leith, as we discuss her exhibition, Melancholia, showing in the Simpson Gallery.
Following the loss of her father, Janet Leith uses the human figure to explore her own emotional and physical worlds. She expresses her emotions through the figures’ postures, facial expressions and bold backgrounds, adding dynamic linework of internal organs. Drawing inspiration from an article, Privileged Piety: Melancholia and the Herbal Tradition, by Laurinda S Dixon, Leith brings a historic perspective to her works.
Leith’s work is a symbolic representation of her personal state of mind, a sense of disquiet and a variety of emotions through the use of the female nude. The figures are depicted as vulnerable and stark against bold backgrounds; the large, cropped bodies, torsos and busts are de-identified through fabric wrapping of the face and body.
