Presenter: Brenda Wellman, Education & Public Programs Curator, Benalla Art Gallery
Join curator Brenda Wellman, as she discusses the Gallery’s feature exhibition The Ledger Collection with insights into the exhibition’s development and some of the history and stories behind the art and artists.
The Ledger Collection celebrates the incredible legacy of the Gallery’s major benefactors, Laurence (Laurie) Ledger MBE, Erma Ledger and ‘Wooleen,’ their farming enterprise. As well as significant financial support, the Ledgers donated more than 450 works to Benalla Art Gallery and these have formed the foundation of the Gallery’s Collection, featuring in many thematic exhibitions. With over 200 works, from the 1840s through to the 1980s, this exhibition is displayed as a ‘salon hang’ but still only shows half of the Ledgers’ total gift of artworks.
Brenda Wellman bio:
Brenda Wellman started her career in regional galleries at Albury in 2002 under Benalla’s inaugural Director, Audray Banfield AM. In 2011 she relocated to Ballarat to join the curatorial team at Australia’s oldest and largest regional gallery. A 12-month professional development opportunity during 2017-18 saw Brenda working with National Exhibitions Touring Support (NETS) Victoria at venues from Cairns down the east coast to as far as Mount Gambier. During 2019 and 2020 Brenda built up a highly successful team and program as Director of Horsham Regional Art Gallery before returning home to the North-East in 2021. Developing The Ledger Collection exhibition has been an opportunity to reacquaint herself with Benalla’s permanent Collection and increase her familiarity with it to a much deeper and greater extent.
